In our last blog, we talked about how Dwell Community Church’s Rock-powered mobile app skyrocketed over the past year boasting 8.5x more interactions, 751% more engagement, and over 1000% more views

Their website and Google Search performance tell a different story though. It’s a cautious tale the global Church should be wary of.

As we take a look behind the curtain at Dwell Community Church’s digital engagement from the past year, we find patterns that reveal a significant shift. One that mirrors broader industry trends driven by the rise of AI-powered search.

Since June 2024, Dwell Community Church’s overall website pageviews have slowed down 21.3% with views to their Teaching page dropping a drastic 42%.

Read on to learn what’s causing the decline in website analytics and how churches can pivot their digital strategies to adapt to the threat of AI.

The AI Disruption: Why Clicks Are Vanishing

Just a month before June 2024, Google rolled out a game-changing feature, Gemini AI Summaries, which was a catalyst for a major shift in how people interact with search.

Instead of clicking through to websites, people are now served AI-summarized answers directly at the top of the page. This marked a clear turning point after which Dwell Community Church saw a steep drop in search performance.

The effects were distressing. Click-throughs from Google dropped by 40% year-over-year, with an even sharper 62% decline between October 2024 and September 2025. Impressions fell by 17%, meaning fewer people even saw a link to their site in the first place. With on-site searches also down 21%, it’s clear that people are no longer navigating digital forums the way they used to.

The reality is that even the most thoughtful, truth-filled content is being bypassed when AI owns the interaction. ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI tools scrape and summarize your content without sending seekers to your site, your resources, or your community. These systems don’t point people toward the Church or even your website.

People are still searching though. They’re still asking deep questions, but they’re no longer landing where your church has faithfully created resources to meet them. The game has changed, and the Church must respond.

The Good News: We Have a Backup Plan

Dwell Community Church didn’t wait for their digital presence to slip away, instead they pivoted.

In 2024, they moved from a disconnected, non-native mobile app to a Rock-powered native experience. The difference was undeniable.

Their new app is fully integrated with their Rock database, allowing them to deliver personalized content, build custom features, and fully own their digital platform. As a result, app views grew by 1,040%, engagement rose 751%, and interactions increased 8.5x

You can dig deeper into the success of their mobile app by reading the blog at 8.5x More Interactions: What Happens When Ministry Meets Rock Mobile.

More than just numbers, this change gave them a digital space they control that's immune to SEO changes, AI scraping, and algorithm shifts. It’s their voice, their values, and their platform.

They don’t have to worry about being overlooked, displaced, or deplatformed.

What This Means for Your Church

The drop in their website performance isn’t a failure in their outreach strategy, but rather a reallocation of engagement from web to mobile.

Relying solely on website traffic or search visibility is no longer a sustainable strategy. As AI-driven tools like search summaries continue to rise, fewer people are clicking through church websites, even those searching for you by name.

A mobile app changes that. It gives your congregation a direct, dependable way to stay connected with your content and community. With a native, app-based experience, your ministry becomes more consistent, accessible, and rooted in the rhythms of daily life, not just Sunday mornings.

We’re grateful to Dwell Community Church for sharing their analytics with us from the past year and want to congratulate them on setting up a powerful and flexible digital strategy that’s proactive with time and changing trends.

Don’t get displaced by AI and prep for the change that’s coming. Build something you own, like a Rock-powered native mobile app with Triumph.
